As an initiative of the UNESCO UNITWIN Network “Culture, Tourism, Development”, led by Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University (Paris, France), two MOOCs – Massive Open Online Courses have been published: “Tourism Management at UNESCO World Heritage Sites” Volume 1, 2 and 3.
The UNESCO Chair based at USI has coordinated the development of them and contributed with ad-hoc contents.
The volumes are the result of the collaboration of multiple professors and researchers from member institutions. Vol. 1 (7’700+ learners from 168 countries) was launched on January 15, 2018, and had a duration of eight weeks, completing its runtime on March 9, 2018, and officially closing at the end of 2018. Vol. 2 (4’100+ learners from 153 countries) was launched a year and a half later, on May 6, 2019, running for a period of 6 weeks till June 14, 2019, and closing December 31, 2019. In the context of the Coronavirus crisis, these MOOCs have been made accessible again up to September 2020, in the modality «open archive», without supervision/assistance.
The third volume will be launched on May 24, 2021, and remain open until the end of December 2022.
In the most recent volume, a rich list of global case studies complements the theoretical overviews of the six main topics presented.
The development and design of the third volume took place in 2020. Lockdowns, travel and movement restrictions, as well as a widespread difficulty in retrieving and receiving technical and logistic assistance for the video productions, made the coordination and creation of the materials a whole new challenge for the Instructor and Design Team.
