On Thursday,  3rd of March, 2022, the USI UNESCO Chair had the pleasure to welcome Jose Bastante, head of the National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu. He presented his recent publication “Machupicchu Investigaciones Interdisciplinarias”, and the work he is doing at Machu Picchu to develop sustainable tourism management. The book is the 1st comprehensive scientific publication on Machu Picchu and has been curated together with Fernando Astete (previous head of the Park) and published by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture in 2021.

Jose Bastante is an archeologist with a Master in Cultural Heritage Management and a PhD in Social Sciences with a focus on History from the National University of San Marco of Lima, Peru. He currently is a member of the College of Archaeologists of Peru, of the American Society of Archaeology and of the Board of Directors of ICOMOS, Peru. He has been invited as guest speaker at numerous academic events in Peru, US, Mexico, Poland, Ecuador, Indonesia and Italy. Since 2013 he is director of the Archaeological and Interdisciplinary research Program in the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu, and since 2019 he serves as the youngest ever WHS Head there. He has been implementing a new sustainable management model based on the conservation of the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. He is author of numerous publications on the Macchu Picchu archaeological heritage.
